Steve McNamara eyeing up halfback replacement for James Maloney

Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara has given an update on his quest for a new halfback to replace the outgoing James Maloney.

Maloney is heading to French Elite Championship side FC Lezignan at the end of this season after enjoying two fruitful years in the south of France.

And, McNamara knew he wasn’t going to change the veteran halfback’s decision once the two talked about the future.

“We had a chat about certain things and I think went Jimmy came back he was 100% sure,” McNamara said.

“There was no doubt in his mind that it’s the right thing for him and his family at this stage.

“In terms of trying to change his mind, it wasn’t an option for him.”

The Dragons boss also said that the club are actively looking for a replacement already.

“We’re looking around and seeing what options are available.

“It’s a big gap to fill, we’ve got some good young players internally who can play that position and we will make those decisions later on.”
