Steve McNamara explains how his Catalans Dragons defeated Hull KR

Steve McNamara’s Catalans Dragons were not spectacular as they defeated Hull KR today but did enough to win – the sign of a top team.

They downed a struggling Hull KR 20-8 live on Channel 4 despite falling 8-0 behind early and trailing 8-4 at the break.

Speaking to Channel 4 after the game he reflected on this difficult start and why his side were still able to win: “We were way off the mark today. Credit to Hull KR they were good we weren’t so good but it’s the defence.

“When you defend well, we conceded one try today and last week, and if you can defend your tryline even when you’re not playing well you give yourself a chance to win the game.”

Another key aspect in the win asides from the defensive effort was the performance of exciting young individuals who could be disregarded as squad players but are the future of the club.

Take Matthieu Laguerre for example. He scored the game turning try with a 100 metre intercept after halftime and McNamara was keen to praise him and the others who have come into the side in recent weeks: “It’s the depth that those players give to your squads. Most team’s first 17s, 18s, 19s can be very similar but when you get injuries and your players come in and to be fair to these players they’re not just in because of injuries, they’re in on form and that adds depth and gives you the chance to compete for competitions.”
