Steve McNamara compares Dom Young to Wigan Warriors legend as ex-Leeds Rhinos duo shower him in praise

Since the World Cup began, one English player has been grabbing the headlines.

It all started in the warm-up against Fiji when Dom Young scored a lovely try but created more for his teammates and then he showed just how good he was against Samoa with a World Class brace.

Then against France, he backed that up with two more tries the latter of which was a length of the field effort which sent the crowd wild.

After the game on BBC, Catalans Dragons boss Steve McNamara compared him to one of the greatest wingers to ever play the game in the shape of the electric former Wigan winger Martin Offiah who attracted fans just for the amazing tries he would score game after game.

To McNamara, Young brings similar excitement: “It’s like with Martin Offiah back in the day, that excitement, that style. It was a different game back then, but when he got his intercept, he was flying.”

Meanwhile, Leeds Rhinos legend Jamie Peacock believed Young brings individual brilliance to England boosted by the fact he has smart players creating opportunities for him: “What’s making him stand out is moments of individual brilliance like this and then also he has some fantastic teammates on his inside who are putting him in the right places at the right times to score some wonderful tries.

“He was outstanding, it was the biggest cheer of the game when he was going down field.”

Meanwhile, another Leeds legend in Jamie Jones-Buchanan believed Young, like some of the Aussie and Kiwi stars, is one of the biggest attractions of the tournament: “The whole crowd erupted, it was like being in the 100 metre final in the Olympics. You look at players like Joey Manu, Josh Addo-Carr, they sell tickets well so does he.”
