State of Origin to come to England? – Here’s what Barrie McDermott said

Barrie McDermott has called for a game of State of Origin to be played in London.

He believes the concept could be similar to NFL games being played over in the UK.

“I was thinking when I was watching the game, I love Origin, always have, but we should have NFL style Origin matches,” he said on The Bench.

“Instead of taking it to Adelaide for the growth of the game, take it to London, take it to Scotland, take it to this country, we’re all passionate.

“Take it on the road, grow the interest. Obviously for those of us who are steeped in the sport we follow Super League but the next level is the NRL, and to bring it over here might just I think grow the game at every level.

“I think London, I think one of those big stadiums, Tottenham Hotspurs maybe.”

This comes as he and Jon Wilkin claimed Yorkshire vs Lancashire doesn’t work.

Wilkin said: “We don’t hate each other as much as New South Wales and Queensland. There’s not as much animosity.

“It didn’t work. There’s too many games anyway for our players. It’s another fixture and we’re at Magic weekend now already.

“Just sell out some events first before we start looking around to do other things. We’re at Magic Weekend now,  just sell this out, sell the Challenge Cup out.

Meanwhile, McDermott added: “I’m not rubbishing it, I’m just saying we just need to invest, not just monetise, invest and put some effort into those big events. But it will take clubs to let go of the weekend and as we know they’re struggling.”
