Star player’s big move reportedly in doubt

NRL

Wakefield Trinity have confirmed that winger Lewis Murphy has suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury.

Murphy left the field during the first half of Friday’s game with Huddersfield and scans have confirmed the severity of the injury, which will unfortunately rule the youngster out for the rest of the 2023 season.

Wakefield Trinity Head Coach, Mark Applegarth, said: “We are all really disappointed for Lewis and it’s a cruel blow.

“Everyone at the club will support him through his rehab and I know he will be relentless in coming back better than ever in 2024.”

Wakefield Trinity would like to wish Lewis a very speedy recovery.

Murphy has been linked with a move to the NRL with Sydney Roosters for 2024.

How this could impact that remains unclear though Zerotackle have reported that it could put his NRL contract into question.

The winger was set to sign a two year deal but there has been no official confirmation and the Australian publication have reported that this injury setback could put his contract into jeopardy.

Recently, Applegarth spoke about Murphy’s NRL links:

“We’re always talking as a player and coach do but what I can say is that Lewis is under contract for the upcoming year. There’s no contract signed for the year after that currently so it is all speculation as we speak, if there’s an announcement to make then we’ll make it.

“Lewis is 100% committed to Wakefield Trinity this coming year, I for one am looking forward to seeing him back on the field. I thought he had an excellent year last year and it was really pleasing to see him have that breakout year.”

With Tom Johnstone leaving Belle Vue and taking his talents to Perpignan it was the perfect chance for Murphy to cement himself as Applegarth said:

“Everyone was asking who is going to replace Tom but luckily last year Lewis had that year and it kinds of softens the blow. They are their own players, have their own strengths and they prefer different wings but definitely Lewis scoring the sort of tries that Tom scored softened the blow for the fans.
