Wakefield Trinity came up short despite a valiant effort against Huddersfield Giants on Friday night.
After the game coach Mark Applegarth opened up on what went wrong for his side when speaking to BBC West Yorkshire Sport.
“I thought we lacked a bit of composure in their final 20 and could have ended our sets better. The effort is there but congrats to Huddersfield, I think we lost to a better team on the evening.
“It’s just composure, we talked about it after the Catalans game as well but the effort and applications I can’t fault our lads whatsoever.
“I don’t really want to keep going on that Wigan game but we were generally off, there was a few factors but the main one was that we weren’t at the races.”
Making the defeat worse is the loss of star player Lewis Murphy.
On him, Applegarth said: “We’ll get him in for a scan next week but I’ll have to watch it back on video. From what I saw it was a contest in the air but we’ll have a look and see if we can work out exactly what’s gone on, but I don’t think he’ll be available for next week. It’s something to do with his knee so I presume it’s how he’s come down and landed on it.”
Murphy has recently been linked with a move to Sydney Roosters.
He also gave an assessment of debutant Sam Eseh: “I thought it was a solid debut, we told him to go out there and be efficient in his job. As you can see he’s definitely going to make his mark over the next few years in Super League. I’m really happy and proud he got his debut.”
He also gave his view on the current situation: “We’re on round three and I think we’ve played three of last season’s top four. It’s not all panic, apart from that 60-0 loss to Wigan we’ve been in contest with them. That’s not me saying that I accept losses but what I’m saying is that there’s a lot of effort there and there’s a lot of things we can work with. It’s definitely not all doom and gloom by any means, we’ve just got to get a bit smarter in certain areas.
