St Helens wish departing player well as he joins Championship club

Super League Champions St Helens have confirmed the release of one of their young players today.

Half-back Ellis Archer has joined Barrow Raiders ahead of the 2023 Betfred Championship season.

Archer featured for the Saints first team last year as they won the League Leaders’ Shield.

He is the second St Helens player to make this move after Rio-Osayomwanbo Corkill.

Born and raised in Barrow, Archer first featured for Saints’ scholarship team in 2019, before going on to play for their U19s, academy and reserves.

After four years of commuting to Merseyside to follow his professional rugby league dream, the 18-year-old’s hard work was rewarded last August when he made his Super League debut against Wakefield Trinity.

Archer will look to continue his development with the Raiders next year, as he competes for a starting shirt alongside fellow half-backs Jarrod Sammut, Ryan Johnston and Jake Carter.

St Helens have wished him well, a classy touch from a class club, as they released the following statement:

“Young stand-off Ellis Archer has been released from his Saints contract to sign a one-year deal with his hometown Club, Barrow Raiders.

“Everyone at the Saints wants to thank Ellis for his hard work, dedication and commitment and we wish him well in his future career.”
