St Helens winger Tommy Makinson departs to Super League rivals

Tommy Makinson plays for St Helens

Tommy Makinson will sign for Catalans Dragons on a two-year deal from St Helens from the start of the 2025 season, it has been confirmed.

He makes the move after 14 seasons playing on the wing for the Red Vee.

In that time, the winger scored 201 tries and scored 1412 points in 328 appearances.

He has five Super League Grand Final victories to his name, as well as the 2021 Challenge Cup and 2023 World Club Challenge.

The three-time Super League Dream Team member also represented his country at the 2021 World Cup and scored 20 tries in 14 international appearances.

Known throughout the league as one of its very best finishers, this is a move that will mark huge change for two sides at the top of the table, even with him being 32 years old.

Tommy Makinson swaps St Helens for Catalans Dragons: how they reacted

As the signing was announced, Makinson said: “Over the moon to join the Dragons next year and really excited to join up with Steve, Andy and the team.

“Really excited to bring my family over and embrace the culture at such an amazing club.

“The history and supporters of the club is something that really excites me and I want to be part of something special, and bring trophies and success to Catalans Dragons.”

Catalans head coach Steve McNamara added: Tommy’s pedigree as a player speaks for itself and we are delighted that he and his family have decided to join us.

“He is a leader, hugely competitive and knows how to win. He is a great signing for our club.”

Former teammate Kyle Amor said on Sky Sports News: “Yeah look it is a massive blow for St Helens.

“[Catalans] are getting a proven winner for one –  Tommy’s been a part of the St Helens team that’s dominated the game of Rugby League for a number of years now.

“With Catalans losing Tom Johnsone and losing Tom Davies, Tommy’s a more than adequate replacement.

“I do think the time’s right for St Helens to let Tommy go and explore the south of France with his family. But the challenge probably for Tommy is – can he do what Ryan Hall has done over at Hull KR? When people thought maybe he was getting towards the twilight of his career, he’ll show that there’s more left in him.

“I certainly think Tommy can do that down there. He certainly is one of the best finishers in Super League isn’t he, so we wish him all the very, very best of luck.”
