St Helens team news as Paul Rowley hands out Super League debut and makes spine call

St Helens

St Helens have confirmed a much-changed squad for their clash against Toulouse Olympique with injuries taking their toll on Paul Rowley’s side.

The Red Vee are one of the most injury-impacted sides in Super League with a large portion of their salary cap sat on the sidelines, with the recent injuries to Curtis Sironen and Nene Macdonald only adding to their absentees.

The overseas pair joined the likes of Jack Welsby (shoulder), Matty lees (knee), Jonny Lomax (wrist) and Alex Walmsley (foot) on the club’s casualty list, whilst both Daryl Clark and Jake Burns failed HIAs, creating a hooker crisis, particularly as utility forward Joe Shorrocks remains suspended.

Paul Rowley was then forced to name four players without squad numbers in his 21-man travelling squad, with the Red Vee leaning on their academy system to try and make up a squad.

Hosts Toulouse also enter the game with a major rest advantage after not playing in last week’s Challenge Cup, making the task even tougher for Saints.
