St Helens suffer huge blow

St Helens head coach Paul Wellens

Wigan Warriors, St Helens and Catalans Dragons are battling for the League Leaders’ Shield and this week the Saints battle fourth spot Leigh Leopards in a big game.

It is a big game for both as Leigh hope to secure their spot in the top four to get a home game in the play offs.

But Saints have a few problems with Konrad Hurrell having a set back injury wise and could face weeks out as was revealed by Paul Wellens on Saints TV.

Recently he said:

“Konrad got a bit of a calf strain, something that he’s had issues with in the past.

“We’re not in the business at this stage of the season of forcing people to stay out there and making what was a problem before a lot, a lot worse.

“We’ll get him assessed in the week and see where we’re at with that one.”

“Hopefully it’s not too serious. But we’ll obviously need more information to determine that.”

There is a blow for Dan Norman too who has been ruled out with a head knock:

“I’ll speak to the doctors, he got up and didn’t look too good so I’m assuming so, given the standards now around and those types of incidents.

“Again, I need to sit down with the doctors and see where we’re at in terms of whether Dan is available next week.”

On Morgan Knowles, Wellens said:

“Again, he’s someone we’ve got to assess in the week, but he’s been carrying a bit of an issue for a number of weeks now. A growing issue that’s becoming a bit aggravated.

“So, given the fact that Morgan is an important player for us and Morgan is someone who again put his hand up, he can wait it out.

“I think since he’s come back from those couple of suspensions at the start of the year, he’s been absolutely outstanding for us.

“We’re hoping that he’ll be fit next week but again we’ll need more information.”

Matty Lees returned last week:

“Obviously it was great to have Matty Lees back. He’s pivotal to what we’re about as a team, his work ethic is great but it’s probably been a blessing for him that he missed a couple of games.

“He played a lot for us this year and needed a couple of weeks off, although we didn’t want them in the circumstances that he got them. But yeah, it’s great to have him back on.”
