St Helens star Jack Welsby is relishing the prospect of making it to another Challenge Cup final as Saints travel to Warrington Wolves on Sunday for their quarter-final tie.
Welsby featured off the bench in St Helens’ last win at Wembley in 2021 when they beat Castleford Tigers 26-12.
The Saints fullback admitted that they have a tough game ahead of them in their second match against the Wolves in a trilogy of games across a short period.
The two sides met two weeks ago in Super League, with the Wolves grabbing a 14-12 victory, and are also due to face each other in the league again in another two weeks.
Welsby said that every game against Warrington is a big game, especially when travelling over to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Talking to Saints’ media, he said: “It’s a Challenge Cup knock-out game, sort of feels like a play-off game.
“The boys have really talked about how important it is and we’ve had a lot of emphasis on the Cup this year.
“Hopefully, we can go over to Warrington and get a bit of payback.
“I think it was good for some of our younger players who haven’t played in a game against Warrington.”
The St Helens fullback noted the passionate Warrington supporters and said it can take some time for younger players to get used to that kind of atmosphere.
He added:Â “They know what they’re about now and what the fans are about.
“They’re loud, they’re proud and it’s going to be a massive atmosphere on Sunday so they’re probably not used to stuff like that so it’s good to get those experiences.
“Last time, it was Marc Sneyd’s first game as well, he’s going to be better than he was.
“Obviously, they’re building with a really good result against Leeds with a weakened back line so they’re going to be confident.”
St Helens fullback on first Super League win at Catalans since 2018
Last weekend’s trip to Catalans was also Welsby’s 150th St Helens appearance already, despite only turning 24 a couple of weeks ago.
Around 700 fans made the trip over to the south of France and Welsby was thrilled to reward them with a 14-13 victory, having not won in Catalans in Super League since 2018.
He said: “It was my first league win over there as well!
“I think we won one in the Challenge Cup but it’s been a tough place to go for us and just glad to get over the line really.
“We dug in and played some good stuff but there’s a lot to work on.
“I think when we finished the game, I’m used to going over there and apologising in recent years so it was nice to go over and celebrate.
“It’s a good following and our fans are easily the best in the league. Hopefully, they bring the same this weekend.”
The Saints star ended by talking about his desire to make it to Wembley again, admitting that it’s a big goal for the Saints side in 2025.
He finished: “It’s special. You don’t know how many chances you’re going to get to play there so it’s just more silverware for the club, that’s all I want.
“I want to keep winning games and winning trophies and then the good experiences will come off the back of it.”
