It’s not been the perfect start to the 2025 season for St Helens but utility back Moses Mbye believes they’re on the right track.
After big wins against Salford Red Devils and Castleford Tigers and a closer victory over Wakefield Trinity, Saints have now lost their last two in Super League.
After a sub-par performance against Hull KR, St Helens followed it up with a better showing against Warrington Wolves on Friday night but still lost 14-12.
Mbye said they never underestimated Warrington, despite their inconsistent start to the season also.
Speaking to the club’s media, he said: “It was a quality game. Obviously, it was two quality sides.
“Warrington just seemed to have it over us at the minute but it was disappointing.
“I thought we created plenty of opportunities and we had enough opportunities to win that game.
“It’s probably on us a little bit to fine-tune a couple of things but I think it was certainly a step in the right direction and it was a good brand of football.”
St Helens star on ‘evident’ improvements as Challenge Cup target laid out
The side was much improved from their previous Super League outing against Hull KR and Mbye said it is noticeable but there’s still more progress to be made.
On seeing the improvements, he said: “I think they’re evident. We were expecting Warrington’s best tonight.
“They’re going to get up for this game, it’s a bit of a derby for us.
“We’ve got to respect Warrington, we’ve got to give them credit, they played really well and they beat us.
“We just didn’t get it right but we certainly didn’t let ourselves down.”
The 31-year-old was playing his first game of the season following multiple injuries during pre-season and he was just happy to be back in the side to play wherever needed.
He added: “My lungs felt like I missed a couple of beats but it was definitely a good platform for me.
“I had a bit of an interrupted pre-season with a couple of injuries and then the team was starting really well at the start of the year.
“I got an opportunity to play tonight. Hopefully, Daz (Clark) is okay.
“It’s just one of those, whenever I’m needed, that’s my role.”
St Helens travel to Catalans Dragons on Saturday before a Challenge Cup quarter-final showdown against Warrington again on Sunday 6th April.
Mbye admitted that winning the Challenge Cup in 2025 is a massive goal for St Helens, which they haven’t won since 2021.
He said: “We’ve got a big opportunity in the Cup. They all do matter but we want the Cup this year so let’s go after it.”
