After returning home on the other side of the world in his off-season, Konrad Hurrell is back in St Helens and looking in good shape as he and the team get to work preparing for Betfred Super League 2024.
The centre has now played his final international match for his beloved Tonga and is fully focused on his club rugby.
Hurrell is still in the number 23 shirt ahead of the new year despite the fact that Saints have the number three shirt vacant. Hurrell has spent long periods at the Saints’ starting centre but has never been given a starting jersey despite scoring in the 2022 Grand Final.
With the three shirt vacant and Saints struggling to find a player to take it, the club have a decision to make about whether or not to go with Hurrell as their starting centre going into 2024.
Hurrell ended the season with some injury woes which kept him out of the side for the big games against Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons in the Super League play-offs. He will be hoping to start the season in that right centre spot.
St Helens will commence the 2024 Betfred Super League season at the Totally Wicked Stadium against the newly promoted London Broncos.
The former Champions’ home opener against the capital club is in Round One and will take on Friday, 16th February 2024 kicks off at 8pm and will be the first meeting between the two clubs since the 2019 season when London were last in the top-flight competition. London actually were able to defeat Saints twice in 2019 despite the fact they finished first with a dramatic lead at the top of the table going on to win the Super League title.
Mike Eccles’ men earned a stunning promotion from the Championship after finishing the season in fifth place and winning three knock-out play-off games, the last of which was the Championship Grand Final against Toulouse in France.
Saints look set to keep Jack Welsby at the club with a new deal on the table to keep him until 2028. This means the Saints can focus on signing a centre.
