St Helens bound Kyle Feldt saw his NRL career come to an abrupt end through injury this morning.
Feldt has penned a two-year deal with St Helens and he will be making the move to Merseyside in the off-season to continue his glittering career in Super League. However, before he will have allowed himself to look ahead to what is to come, the winger had the small matter of seeing out the NRL season with North Queensland Cowboys to focus on.
The Cowboys were in play-off action against Cronulla Sharks on Friday knowing a win would see them progress to a preliminary final against Penrith Panthers. Feldt started the game but he was powerless to prevent the Sharks scoring four first half tries before leaving the field through injury.
North Queensland did manage to narrow the scoreline with a second half comeback, but Feldt was forced to watch on from the sidelines with an ice pack on his calf. It was confirmed that the winger would not be fit enough to return to the action at the Allianz Stadium and as the Cowboys’ hopes of progression came to an end, losing 26-18, so did Feldt’s NRL career.
Of course, the extent of the calf injury is unknown at this stage, but it’s unlikely that it will have any impact on his start to life at St Helens in a few months’ time, where he will be effectively replacing long time favourite Tommy Makinson, who is heading to Catalans Dragons.
The 32-year-old has been with the Cowboys, his hometown club, for the entirety of his career so far, making 216 appearances and scoring 151 tries, including 23 this season which has actually been his most prolific year to date.
With his season over, Feldt will now be keeping a keen eye on Paul Wellens’ side’s fortunes as they look to progress deep into the play-offs.
