St Helens’ quota situation ahead of make or break 2025

Paul Wellens St Helens

Despite just a few years ago looking like an unbeatable dynasty, St Helens only just scraped their way into the Super League play-offs this past season.

Therefore, the side – which will have Lee Briers as assistant coach to Paul Wellens – has been looking to make some big signings to get themselves back to the big time.

The loss of Lewis Dodd was a bombshell, but left-field signings such as Lewis Murphy have shown that the side are looking to make it a new era for the team.

They’ve also made some statement signings that contribute towards their overseas quota with all three recruits for 2025 hailing from the NRL, including Murphy.

Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those who didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21.

With that in mind, here’s their quota situation.

Sione Mata’utia and Waqa Blake have left, but Konrad Hurrell could remain on for 2025, and this would put them up to seven out of seven spots taken.

The final outcome of this is unclear, but head coach Paul Wellens has told media previously that talks would occur between player and club.

Four players will definitely still be around, however: Agnatius Paasi, Curtis Sironen, James Bell and Moses Mbye are all contracted for next season, but not beyond that – meaning we might see plenty of change at the end of 2025.

Finally, there are also NRL signings Kyle Feldt and Tristan Sailor, who have both signed two-year deals and will be hoping to set Super League alight.

It seems that Sailor, despite being mostly a full-back, will be lining up at stand-off next year, after being given the number six shirt for 2025.

Meanwhile, Feldt is the North Queensland Cowboys’ all-time top scorer and adds fire-power on the wing that was somewhat lost with the departure of Tommy Makinson.

If Hurrell stays with the club, they won’t be able to make any further overseas recruitment unless someone else is released from their contract.
