St Helens’ Paul Wellens lists what he loves about Harry Robertson and makes position point

St Helens

Harry Robertson was one of the stars of the show for St Helens on Saturday as Paul Wellens’ side saw off Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road.

The youngster, who has been at centre this season, scored two tries in the Saints‘ 46-6 win over the Tigers, a result which reinforced their spot at the top of the Super League table.

Kyle Feldt, Jonathan Bennison, Jack Welsby, Alex Walmsley, Joe Batchelor, Agnatius Paasi and Jonny Lomax also got over the line in West Yorkshire, with Welsby being widely considered to be man of the match.

However, the performance of Robertson, who is coming off his first pre-season campaign in the senior environment after announcing himself to Super League fans last year, was certainly worth talking about after full-time and Wellens could be heard waxing lyrical about the 19-year-old.

“What I love about him the most is everyday when he turns up to training he’s got a hunger, thirst and a want to improve and he is always in the coaches’ office with Freddie (Eamon O’Carroll and Briersy asking about different things he can be doing to develop his game. And for me as of course, that’s the dream,” Wellens said after the game, per St Helens Star.

The Saints boss added: “If you look at young players making debut for Saints in last 10/15/20 years, quite often they’re coming into a team that’s doing well and playing well, and they’ve got a lot of experience around them.

“It was a very different situation for Harry last year. It was very much a baptism of fire for him but the way he approached it was first class and told us a lot about him as a young man.

“But at this moment in time, he’s playing in a team with a lot of experience around him and again, showing quite clearly what a player he is, but also what a player you can go on to be as well.

“Harry’s favourite position is full-back, but I don’t think the experience he’s getting out there tonight and moving forward will hurt him in any way. And obviously the guy in the full-back shirt at the moment is one of the best players in the world, so I think Harry will be happy to get a game wherever he can.”
