St Helens’ Paul Wellens issues Tristan Sailor verdict after eye-catching Super League start

St Helens

St Helens fans will see the very best of Tristan Sailor as the weather starts to warm up. That’s the belief of head coach Paul Wellens, who has been delighted with what he has seen from the playmaker in his short time of the club so far.

Sailor has been one of the most impressive off-season signings of the Super League season so far, with the half-back touching down for eight tries in his first eight appearances in the red V. That run started with a try on his Saints debut in the Challenge Cup against West Hull before he dotted down on four occasions against Salford Red Devils in round one

Since then he has scored in the win over Leeds Rhinos in the Cup and he bagged a brace last weekend in a dramatic 14-13 win over Catalans Dragons. He currently sits joint second in the Super League top tryscorers list then and with four assists to his name, he has been one of the most lethal players with the ball in hand so far.

Wellens is understandably pleased with the start he has made to life in the north west of England, but he expects Sailor to step things up a notch and take St Helens to the next level in the coming weeks and months.

“I think he’s done a really good job,” Wellens said ahead of St Helens’ Challenge Cup quarter-final with Warrington Wolves on Sunday. “There’s been a lot of talk around him as a player, an exciting player, which he is.

“He’s found his way to the line on numerous occasions already and we knew he had that in his locker. That’s precisely the reason why we brought him over in the first place.

“He’s a wonderful person who has really integrated well into the environment here at St Helens. I think his performances are going to continue to improve.

“You see the dry weather now, the sun is shining and the tracks are drying up, those types of conditions suit Tristan as well.”
