St Helens made history when they won a fourth consecutive Grand Final last week defeating Leeds Rhinos to do so.

It leaves many claiming that this Saints side is the best in Super League history and certainly the best St Helens side we’ve seen which itself is a bold claim considering the 2006 St Helens side who won the treble.

Now, someone very well positioned to weigh in on this debate, St Helens owner Eamonn McManus has answered this question on the Eddie and Stevo podcast.

Here’s what he had to say on whether this St Helens side is the greatest in the club and Super League history: “The facts say that don’t they. You can compare and contrast, I think when Super League started right the way through to now, if you were going to say someone would win four in a row, they’d find it doubtful.”

St Helens as a club are now the most successful side in Super League history with a record 10 titles to their name in 27 seasons.

The way they’ve achieved this is through finding the right appointment at the right time in the coaching hotseat, which is something they need to do again if they’re going to make it five on the spin in 2023.

Widely expected to be departing coach Kristian Woolf’s assistant Paul Wellens, McManus revealed on the podcast that an appointment had been made and that it would be revealed in good time: “Very simply, if you look to follow you don’t achieve. We’re now looking ahead. We know who the new coach is going to be.”
