St Helens man feeling ‘like a new man’ after two-year injury struggle

St Helens Konrad Hurrell

St Helens’ Konrad Hurrell admits he ‘feels like a new man’ as he approaches the 2025 Super League season without the pain of the neck injury that cut his campaign short last time around.

The centre was forced to miss the last three and a half months of the season as he underwent surgery to resolve the issue after managing the issue for a couple of years. It was a frustrating period for Hurrell, who has had a big influence at the Totally Wicked Stadium since his move from Leeds Rhinos three years ago, and the side’s results during his spell on the sidelines didn’t exactly help matters.

Paul Wellens’ side won just four of the 13 games they played in Hurrell’s absence over the second half of the season and slipped from the league summit to sixth, very nearly missing out on a spot in the play-offs altogether. Such results were obviously tough to watch for the Tongan as he attempted to recover from injury.

Fast forward a few months, though, and Hurrell, after seeing his deal with the club renewed, is pain free for the first time in two years and raring to go as the Saints attempt to set the record straight.

“I feel like I’m a new man,” Hurrell told Serious About RL during a press event at Liverpool airport on Monday. “The last two years I’ve carried this injury so after the surgery and the process of doing the rehab, I feel so good. I’m pain free, I can lie down properly, I can sit down properly.

“It was something in my neck, they had to take it out and put a cage in there because the nerve was bothering me. All good now though, no pain anywhere. I used to be just sat here and I could feel pain running down everywhere so I feel like a new man.

“It was very frustrating for me but at the same time I feel like we did well for what we put up with last year. There’s no excuses, that’s why you have a squad but we did have a lot of injuries last year and I feel like we did well for what we had last year. But, at the same time we didn’t win any trophies so what’s the point in saying that.

“Individually it was frustrating because obviously I was out for the last four months of the year. I hated it but I’m glad I’ve got another year now.”

On pre-season itself, the St Helens man added: “It’s been really good. It feels like a fresh start for everyone, a few new signings and a few new signings with staff as well. It feels like a fresh start. For myself personally it’s been a good pre-season for me. I haven’t done a full pre-season for the last two years so, I feel good going into this season.”
