Tommy Makinson has taken to social media to air his feelings after the St Helens veteran was handed a three-game ban following his red card against Hull KR.
It marked the second time that the winger had been sent off this season, also picking up a three-game ban following his sending off against Castleford Tigers.
However, this ban will sting a lot more with just four games left in the regular season. It could also mean that he has played his final game as a St Helens player in front of the home crowd at The Totally Wicked Stadium, something the 32-year-old has referenced.
The Match Review Panel found him guilty of a Grade D charge of ‘Head Contact’, warranting a three-match ban and a fine of £250, meaning he’ll miss games against Huddersfield, Warrington and Castleford, with the last being the club’s final home game of the season.
Taking to X, Makinson reacted: “Gutted is an understatement! Hope that isn’t the end of my journey at the TWS. Thanks for all the messages.”
It wasn’t just Makinson on social media as fans had earlier used it to react themselves, almost unanimously calling out the decision.
St Helens star set to appeal ban
There are two scenarios in which Makinson could play again in the Red Vee at The Totally Wicked Stadium. If St Helens manage to finish fourth, which they’re currently just two points shy of, then they will host a home playoff game.
Another option would be if the club appeal the suspension and either have it overturned or reduced. A reduction to just two games would see Makinson return in time to play Castleford Tigers at home and secure a proper send-off.
It’s been reported by The St Helens Star that the club have decided to appeal the ban, something that will happen tomorrow night at an RFL Operational Rules Tribunal.
Given Makinson’s disciplinary record and earlier ban this season, a successful appeal might be unlikely.
The winger will end his 14-year stint with St Helens at the end of the season as he moves to join Catalans Dragons for 2025, bringing an end to a 334-game career donning the Red Vee.
Gutted is an understatement!
Hope that isn’t the end of my journey at the TWS.
Thanks for all the messages.
