St Helens lead appeal to find ex-Great Britain star Alex Murphy’s Challenge Cup medals

St Helens have launched a plea to help reunite club legend Alex Murphy with his Challenge Cup winners’ medals.

Murphy, who spent the first decade of his career with his boyhood club, is one of the sport’s finest-ever players and coaches with the 85-year-old being involved in the sport as either a player or a coach from 1956 to 1994.

He even returned in 2003 as director of Leigh, another of his former clubs with whom he won the Challenge Cup in 1971, something he did with St Helens in 1961 and Warrington in 1976.

His playing career saw him make over 500 club appearances as well as representing Great Britain 27 times, however, it was with St Helens whom he is most associated with – making a whopping 320 appearances for the club.

Regrettably, St Helens have now had to launch a statement and appeal to help reunite Murphy with various bits of memorabilia, including his Challenge Cup medals.

St Helens appeal to reunite club legend with Challenge Cup medals

Murphy’s daughter Ann has taken to social media to appeal for help after revealing that her father, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in late 2024, was no longer in possession of his Challenge Cup medals.

She had revealed that Murphy had given his medals away in a pub in St Helens with those accepting potentially either taking advantage or simply unaware of his condition.

St Helens have shared the news and confirmed that they are ‘joining the appeal for these pieces of history to be returned’.

The club’s statement explained: “Alex’s daughter Ann has taken to social media in an appeal for help after revealing her dad’s diagnosis, stating that Murphy’s five Challenge Cup winners medals and perhaps more of the memorabilia attached to his careers, are sadly no longer in the legendary player’s possession and could they please be returned.

“It appears that some people may have taken advantage of Alex’s condition, however this may also be just a case of others accepting these pieces of history as gifts but being unaware of his diagnosis.

“The Saints are joining this appeal for these pieces of history to be returned, and should anyone wish to drop them off directly with the Club at the Totally Wicked Stadium they will be returned to the Murphy family immediately.”

In her initial post on social media, Ann concluded: “Not many people could proudly say ‘My Dad has 5 Wembley winners medals’ … sadly, I can’t say that any longer.”

If anyone has any information on the location of Alex Murphy’s medals, they are urged to contact St Helens with contact details available here.
