St Helens have suffered even further injury concerns, head coach Paul Wellens has confirmed.
Saints have had one of their worst seasons for a very long time.
They’re coming off the back of being nilled by their biggest rivals and a 42-6 defeat to Hull KR, while knowing they could miss out on the Super League play-offs for the very first time.
They’ve also had to battle numerous injury worries, with young players being given their first Super League opportunities more out of necessity than from it being a certain club strategy.
Head coach Paul Wellens has provided an injury update in his latest press conference.
St Helens injury update with further concerns revealed
Alex Walmsley missed last week’s defeat due to injury, and Wellens said: “He slipped in the garden with his kids playing last week which is the nature of our luck at the moment. He’s responded well to treatment but hopefully that improvement continues.”
Things certainly aren’t going their way at the moment!
He continued: “Alex is in contention to play. Tomorrow’s training session will be a big factor in whether he’ll be fit or not.”
However, he confirmed further knocks to players, adding: “We have a few guys like Agnatius (Paasi) and Sione (Mata’utia) carrying a few bumps and bruises. We’ve got some tough decisions to make but what I’m keen to do is get a competitive 17 out there who can respond from a disappointing performance on Saturday.”
Another problem comes for James Bell, with Wellens saying: “With James it’s a bit of how long is a piece of string. We’re waiting for strength in his calf to return; the problem stems from his lower back but it’s affecting his calf.”
Therefore, it seems there will be even more opportunities presented to young players as they face Huddersfield Giants on Sunday.
