St Helens are doing it tough at the minute. Paul Wellens’ side are still without a host of key names and their injury troubles have taken a toll on performances with the Saints losing five Super League games on the bounce. It’s a run of form that has seen them drop to sixth and another loss this week could see them surrender a play-off spot altogether.
Ahead of the final eight games of the Super League season, we take a look at the Saints’ current injury list and potential return dates.
Jack Welsby
The last thing St Helens needed was to see Welsby pull up last week against Leigh Leopards and it seems the full-back could be looking at a lengthy lay-off. Wellens confirmed it was a hamstring issue and the club will hope to know more this week with fans fearing the worst.
Alex Walmsley
Walmsley was ruled out for four months at the end of April after going under the knife to deal with a meniscus injury. He’s three months into that lay-off now and ahead of schedule, with a return in the next couple of weeks thought to be a possibility.
Sione Mata’utia
Mata’utia hasn’t been seen since June after suffering a neck injury. However, the club are yet to confirm a return date as they give the forward the time he needs to recover.
Konrad Hurrell
Hurrell has also been struggling with a neck injury and that is expected to rule him out for the remainder of the season. The club have a decision to make regarding the Tonga international with the player’s contract due to expire at the end of the season.
Morgan Knowles
Knowles is on the verge of a return to action after having surgery on a groin problem at the back end of May. He was initially due to miss five to six weeks but could be set to feature this weekend.
Jake Wingfield
Underwent shoulder surgery earlier in the season and looks set to miss most, if not all, of the remainder of the regular season. He should be fit in time for the play-offs, but Saints have to make them first, of course.
Joe Batchelor
The back-rower hasn’t been seen since May due to an ankle issue and all being well, he should be closing in a return in the next couple of weeks.
George Delaney
Delaney picked up an issue against Leigh last week with Wellens insisting the forward was playing ‘on one leg’ for a period. We’ll know more this week, more than likely.
Moses Mbye
Mbye had to be withdrawn against the Leopards. Again, we’ll know more this week regarding the possibility of a lay-off.
Mark Percival
Percival has been struggling over the last couple of weeks and was forced off through injury against Leigh. Whether he’s looking at a spell on the sidelines remains to be seen, though.
