Paul Wellens has confirmed that Moses Mbye will likely miss the remainder of St Helens’ season. The playmaker sat out of last Friday’s clash at Leigh Leopards after suffering a calf problem in the build-up to the contest at the Leigh Sports Village.
As such, he was always rated as a doubt for Saturday’s play-off eliminator against Warrington Wolves, but he will now miss the game and those to come, should the Saints make progress in the knockout stages of the competition.
Wellens did have some good news when discussing injuries, though, with Curtis Sironen pushing to return to the fold after a lay-off, while Alex Walmsley appears ready to step back into contention too after an illness.
“Curtis has got a chance, he runs with the physios today so that will be determined by that session,” Wellens told Serious About RL. “Alex Walmsley has responded well from the illness he had last week so he will no doubt come into contention if he continues those improvements.
“Unfortunately Moses Mbye has got a three to four week calf injury so that’s probably the season, it might be one that we can look at should we get to a Grand Final but we’ve got to worry about what we need to do to get there first.”
With an eye to next season, the head coach may have found himself watching through his fingers as St Helens recruit Kyle Feldt limped out of North Queensland Cowboys’ NRL play-off clash with Cronulla Sharks. The calf injury ruled him out for the remainder of the contest and with the Cowboys losing the game, their season has come to an end.
As such, Wellens plans pick up the phone to catch up the winger and get the lowdown on the injury in the not too distant future.
“Not as yet,” he said when asked if he’s spoken to Feldt since the injury. “Their season finished on the weekend and I would imagine that with him playing his last game for the club there they would have gone out and it might take a few days break.
“I’ll certainly touch base with him in the next couple of weeks to check on the extent of that injury and if there’s anything there that we can do to help him.”
