St Helens injury latest as key man posts surgery update

St Helens boss Paul Wellens has had a near full-strength side to pick from for the majority of the season so far but that luck has started to turn.

Before Friday night’s 14-12 loss against Warrington Wolves, Saints had James Batchelor missing due to HIA protocols and Mark Percival was a doubt for the match with an ankle injury.

Whilst these are short-term issues, there’s one longer-term injury which will be a cause for concern for Saints fans.

New recruit Kyle Feldt will be missing for the next twelve weeks due to a hand injury.

However, the good news is that the winger has had a successful surgery on the ruptured ligament in his hand and starts the road to recovery.

He originally sustained the injury against Hull KR but played the following week against Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup.

Unfortunately, for Feldt and Saints, that only worsened the injury and meant he required the surgery.

It was hoped that it would be an injury that he could manage throughout the season but the scans revealed much more damage than expected, meaning surgery was the best option.

St Helens boss Paul Wellens confirmed the news during his pre-match conference last week.

He said: “The ruptured ligaments have put the hand in a pretty vulnerable position and the bones and the structures around it so it turns out that it would be too much of a risk to go down the route that we were hoping to go down.”

Saints fans will have been more than impressed by Feldt’s replacement Dayon Sambou during the Warrington game but the former NRL player is a huge miss.

Feldt has three Super League tries to his name so far and has made over 450 metres.

St Helens next travel to the South of France as they face Catalans Dragons on Saturday night.
