St Helens icon Paul Sculthorpe MBE has labelled his former side “unacceptable” and “rudderless” after a poor run of form.
Paul Sculthorpe played over 250 times for Saints, winning four Grand Finals, four Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenges in his time wearing the Red Vee.
That’s on top of becoming the only player to ever win two Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel awards in a row.
His former side, however, suffered five losses in-a-row earlier this season, and are off the back of being nilled against rivals Wigan Warriors and a huge 42-6 loss to Hull KR.
They’re faced with the prospect of not making the Super League play-offs for the very first time, being just one point ahead of chasers Leigh Leopards and two ahead of Leeds Rhinos.
In a column for the St Helens Star, Sculthorpe launched into a scathing review of the team.
St Helens icon gives ultimatum to “unacceptable” players
He started his column with “I thought the past couple of months were bad, but Saturday was an all-time low. It was no surprise to see Saints beaten by Betfred Super League’s form team Hull KR, but the manner of defeat – a 42-6 hammering – was simply unacceptable.”
It was an immediate showcase of what the tone of his piece would be.
He continued: “There’s nobody taking control of things. Our attack looks completely rudderless and our kicking game was virtually non-existent.”
