St Helens boss Paul Wellens fears Mark Percival could be set for an injury lay-off after picking up an ankle injury on Friday night. Wellens’ side sealed their spot in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup as they beat Leeds Rhinos 22-14 at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
However, it seems the win came at a price, with Percival picking up an ankle injury in the second half of the contest. The Saints centre could be seen leaving the field of play and looked in a degree of discomfort as he took up a spot on the bench.
Wellens was asked about Percival’s injury after the game, with the head coach admitting he didn’t look to be in a good way. To make matters worse, Joe Batchelor left the field in the first half of the win with a head knock.
The back-rower failed a subsequent head injury assessment and that will see him miss next week’s return to Super League against Warrington Wolves.
Speaking after the game, Wellens said: “Joe Batchelor undoubtedly won’t play next week obviously with his head injury so we’re going to have to figure out what we do there.
“Mark Percival left the field and has an ice pack on his ankle and we will have to assess it but again the early signs don’t look great.
“We’ll recover over the next couple of days and get a health check on everybody and see where we are at in terms of how we approach next week.”
St Helens scored four tries on the night as Kyle Feldt, Tristan Sailor, Matt Whitley and Harry Robertson all touched down to secure progression in the cup. They were joined in the last eight by Salford Red Devils and Hull KR on Friday, with the draw scheduled to take place on Monday night.
