St Helens give Konrad Hurrell future update

St Helens Konrad Hurrell

St Helens head coach Paul Wellens has provided an update on the status of Konrad Hurrell, as his contract continues to run down.

Hurrell has been in Super League since joining Leeds Rhinos in 2019, and made the switch to the then-champions ahead of the 2022 season.

Since then, he has scored 24 tries in 59 games for Saints, winning the 2022 Super League Grand Final.

This year, he scored the winning try against Wigan Warriors in Rivals Round, but hasn’t played for two months – since a narrow defeat to Salford Red Devils in June.

He won’t feature again this season due to a neck injury, for which he has undergone surgery – Wellens has confirmed he’ll be out for four to six months.

Hurrell’s contract is up at the end of this season, but it is believed that the club have the option to trigger a one-year extension, and if he remains in Super League, he would become exempt from quota spots under new reported Super League rules.

St Helens boss update on Konrad Hurrell ahead of major decision

The club are yet to decide whether to trigger this clause.

Via Love Rugby League, Wellens has said: “We are not really near to getting a resolution with him and his future at this stage but we do need to sit down and have those conversations.”

Saints were linked earlier this season to centre Kevin Naiqama – who left the club to join Huddersfield Giants.

With Tom Opacic now confirmed to be leaving Hull KR, they may also decide to make the signing of him – but with Waqa Blake also off-contract at the end of this season, Wellens and co. may decide they need to keep Konrad Hurrell for 2025.

If he’s free to leave, rival clubs would surely be interested in making a move for the 33-year-old.
