St Helens forward in contract talks as key update provided

Morgan Knowles hopes to have clarity on his future at St Helens before the start of the season.

Knowles is now in the final year of his deal at the Totally Wicked Stadium, with the four-year contract he signed with Saints back in December 2021 due to expire at the end of the season. The loose-forward isn’t the only St Helens man in that situation either with a whopping 17 first-team players approaching the end of their respective terms.

The England international is one of the most high profile names on that list, but he’s joined by the likes of Joe Batchelor, Matty Lees, Agnatius Paasi, Moses Mbye, Matt Whitley and Jon Bennison.

Knowles, though, hopes to have that situation wrapped up and off his mind over the next two or three weeks.

“Yeah, there’s some bits going on at the moment so I’m hoping to get that done and sorted before the season starts,” Knowles told Serious About RL at St Helens’ media day.

Of course, this month was already a big one for the 28-year-old, who has been a regular in the Saints first-team since making his debut in 2015, with his testimonial match taking place. That game takes place on Saturday as Paul Wellens’ side take on Salford Red Devils in a friendly match as the club continue their preparations for the new Super League season.

“I’m excited,” Knowles added about the contest, which is expected to feature at least one or two of the club’s three new signings. “It’s been a lot of work organising things and I didn’t quite realise the amount of work that goes into it. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m obviously hoping that there’s a good turn out on Saturday.

“The year will be full events, so I’ve got golf days, gala dinners and I’ll try and do a few things back home in Barrow, give back to the local community clubs and things like that. I have quite a few ideas, there’s not anything locked in.

“Obviously the game is the big one, so once that’s over and done with I’ll try and make a bit of a plan for the rest of the year in St Helens and up in the homeland as well.”
