Leigh Leopards coach Adrian Lam expects to be able to call on Matt Moylan and Aaron Pene this week when Leigh take on St Helens. The Leopards picked up their second win in as many matches last Friday night as they thumped bottom of the table London Broncos 36-6 at Leigh Sports Village.
Lam’s side will be running out in familiar surroundings once more this Friday when they face a luckless St Helens side who have lost their last four in Super League after seeing a raft of senior figures pick up injuries. Leigh have had their own injuries of late, with Aaron Pene and Matt Moylan missing their win over the Broncos, through respective head and groin issues.
However, Lam has confirmed that the pair will be involved this week as the club look to keep their faint hopes of securing a spot in the top six alive.
“Pene failed his HIA last week so he was automatically a non-selection,” Lam said, per Love Rugby League.
“Moylan just had a slight strain to his groin, he could’ve played at a pinch tonight but we just made a decision to make sure he was 100 per cent for next week and give Zak (Hardaker) a go at fullback. He’ll be playing, he’ll be 100 per cent next week.”
Leigh will be without Matt Davis against Saints due to concussion protocols but the head coach has moved to allay any fears that Tom Amone could be set for a spell on the sidelines after missing the second half of the game against the Broncos.
“It was just a cut so he just needed stitches on that, but I made the decision not to put him back on,” Lam said. “He’s played some big minutes for us so far this season so I was just looking out for him.”
Leigh do have the advantage of a game in hand on their rivals, but at present they find themselves sitting seven points behind the play-off place. If they are to defy the odds and make the top six for the second season running then, the next few weeks could well be vital, with fixtures against Castleford Tigers, Wigan Warriors and Hull FC to play in the fortnight that follows Firday’a game against the Saints.
