St Helens confirm Paul Wellens decision as Eamonn McManus gives verdict

Paul Wellens of St Helens.

Paul Wellens has been a hot topic this season with his future at times debated, especially during a run which saw St Helens ship points aplenty and lose five straight Super League games.

But the question, for now, has been answered. Today, Saints confirmed Wellens will remain as the head coach for the 2025 season.

“I think it gives everyone that little bit of clarity around what is happening next year, there was never any doubt in my mind,” Wellens said. “I walked through the doors here as a 16-year-old in the juniors, and I’ve never wanted to be anywhere else.

“I’m well aware that the job that I’m in now, is a job that is a huge privilege and one that many, many coaches in the rugby league world would love to have. I’m grateful for the opportunity that I’ve got here and I’m going to continue to work hard.”

Wellens was part of the staff during a remarkable run of four straight Super League titles and guided Saints to a World Club Challenge early in his head coaching tenure. But the pressure of following on from Kristian Wolf has ramped up this season.

Eamonn McManus referenced this in his statement on Wellens’ situation, adding that Saints are continuing to back the legendary full-back.

“Paul has had to deal with a squad shorn of many of his star players for much of 2024. He deserves an opportunity to prove himself under better circumstances for the balance of this season and next, and to bring success to the club,” chairman McManus said.

“We will also be looking to improve and strengthen the squad in certain areas for next season, as well as strengthening the coaching team supporting Paul.”

St Helens face Wigan Warriors next up at Magic Weekend in Leeds on Saturday August 17th (5pm kick-off).
