St Helens head coach Paul Wellens has delivered an update on the future of Moses Mbye, who is off contract at the end of the season.
Mbye has been with Saints for two years now, joining midway through the 2023 season on a two and a half year deal. That contract expires in just a few months’ time though, with his future beyond the end of the campaign remaining unclear.
The playmaker isn’t the only St Helens player approaching the end of his current deal, with the likes of Curtis Sironen, Matt Whitley, Agnatius Paasi and Konrad Hurrell in a similar situation, while Morgan Knowles, James Bell and Joe Batchelor are known to have secured their futures elsewhere.
Wellens is across the situation, though, with frequent discussions between the club, the head coach and the player and he gave an update of sorts when asked about Mbye’s next steps in his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.
“We’re in dialogue with Moses but Moses has got some things he wants to work out himself first and foremost and it’s important that we respect that,” Wellens said ahead of this week’s clash with Hull FC. “Conversations have happened, the conversations have been open and honest between myself and Moses, but they will remain private for now.”
St Helens boss on his half-back headache
The Saints travel to East Yorkshire on Saturday in a clash that sees two play-off contenders go head to head at the MKM Stadium. And, it seems as though the head coach has something of a selection headache with Mbye, who has impressed over the last two weeks in the halves in George Whitby’s absence.
Whitby is fit after overcoming the head knock he suffered in June, but Wellens resisted the urge to play him last week against Salford Red Devils and his spot in the side this week is uncertain while Mbye is impressing.
“It’s one that I suppose there is no real right or wrong answer in some ways,” Wellens said on his half-back situation. “However in the last couple of weeks, particularly following on from the Leeds game where I thought Moses and Jonny controlled the game really well.
“It’s a strong message to send to the rest of the squad and the team that if players come in and do their job it makes it very difficult to make a change just for changes sense. It’s always a tough call because George Whitby came into the team and did a wonderful job himself so it’s great that I’ve got options in that department.”
