St Helens boss Paul Wellens was content with his side, following their 46-6 win over Castleford Tigers.

However, Wellens still expects more from Super League’s top scorers but admitted they’re on the right path.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he told viewers about wanting more from his defence.

He said: “I’m pleased with the performance. Obviously, it’s a tough place to come and I’ve just heard Jack (Welsby) say the same thing.

“There’s a little bit of work to do in defence for us but only conceding six points as well is not too bad.”

Wellens spoke highly of his entire squad, especially how they’ve applied themselves throughout pre-season, especially over the last few weeks.

He added: “The way we’ve been training over the last month or so, particularly since Christmas.

“These boys are hitting it in training, it’s remarkable.

“I knew we were ready for anything for any game that comes our way but we don’t want to get carried away with things.

“It’s round 2 and there’s some improvements that we need to make moving forward but we’ll certainly enjoy the win tonight.”

The St Helens boss was very complimentary about youngster Harry Robertson, who’s scored five tries in three games so far in 2025.

Wellens said: “He’s been fantastic and his approach to the game is really refreshing.

“Obviously, he’s really keen, enthusiastic and wanting to learn and to get better.

“He’s not played a lot at centre recently but he’s been practising there in training.”

He’s taken the spot that once belonged to Konrad Hurrell but Wellens insists there’s no animosity there.

He said: “What’s really important to point out is that around the environment, there’s nobody more supportive of Harry than Konrad.

“It’s great that he’s got support from senior players to help him on his journey.”

Wellens finished by looking forward to their next game, a trip to Wakefield, who won’t be an easy team to score against.

He finished: “We’re happy with where we’re at but we’ve got another tough game next week and another trip to West Yorkshire.

“Wakefield showed the other night what they’re all about so we certainly can’t be patting ourselves on the back too much.

“We need to recover well, take our learnings from this game and look to get better.”

St Helens play Wakefield at the DIY Kitchens Stadium on Saturday 1st March at 2.30pm.
