St Helens boss Paul Wellens on pressure surrounding his job after Leigh Leopards drubbing

St Helens head coach Paul Wellens has spoken on the pressure surrounding him, after five losses in a row.

Last time the sides played, Saints won 12-4, but this time, they conceded nine tries in a devastating display.

Matt Moylan started things off after a Mark Percival sin-binning, and from there, the Leopards didn’t look back, eventually making it 46-4.

Wellens said in the post-match press conference: “Yeah, a tough one. I think it was one of those nights where anything that could have gone wrong did.

“Starting with losing Jack Welsby very early on in the game. I thought for 12-15 minutes, we were going set for set with Leigh, we were looking good in that period of play.

“From the minute Mark Percival got sin-binned we lost all control in the game. I was disappointed with the way we handled that period down to 12 men. We shifted a couple of tries and from that moment on we were always under pressure and playing catch up.”

It’s the first time in Super League history that St Helens have lost five games in a row, and this will always put pressure on the head coach for a club of this calibre,

On this, Wellens said: “Look, I’m pressured in the sense that I’m desperate for us to win games and get back on the horse, but look, I don’t get too caught up in the external noise that’s around me.

“For me, I’m not the most important thing here, I’m not improving. I want to continue to work hard every day to try and help these players grow and improve, help the team grow and improve.

“It’s a very challenging period that we’re going through and I’ve been through similar periods as a player and I know that you only get through them by continuing to work hard and continuing to stick together.”

He also accepted that supporters were likely to be unhappy with the recent results, saying: “I know and I accept that there will be a lot of frustrated people out there who will be up for it, and there’s passionate St Helens fans.

“Certainly the manner of defeat tonight won’t please them. And I have to accept that and continue to work hard to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
