St Helens boss Paul Rowley has confirmed he has been interviewed for the England head coach role.
Rowley, who for the past few weeks has stated his ambition of becoming the national team head coach ahead of this year’s Rugby League World Cup, spoke to the five-person panel earlier this week, and is one of five men in the running for the role this Autumn.
The panel, which consists of RFL Chair Nigel Wood and Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield among others, will sit down with each candidate before meeting to decide who will lead the country into the World Cup in Australia.
Rowley is said to be one of five names considered for the role, with another being Leeds boss Brad Arthur, who has also spoken on the proposition this week.
Brian McDermott, Sam Burgess and Steve McNamara are said to be the other candidates, with a decision set to be made as soon as possible.
The St Helens boss spoke to the press on Wednesday to preview the club’s away trip to Hull FC, but a future in international management was one of the key talking points.
“I’ve said before that I put my hand up for it as well and it’s certainly a passion and a goal that I’d like to fulfil,” Rowley confirmed. “Like I’ve said before, I’m in the mix as well.
“I think everybody’s been named who’s been up there and I’m one of them, so yeah, I’m in there as well.”
Asked if he had been in for an interview, he replied: “Yeah, I’ve sat in front of the panel. They were fantastic and really fair.
“I’m pleased that everything was really good and like I said before, grateful for the opportunity to interview. So we’ll see what happens.”
