St Helens boss Kristian Woolf makes bold decision on Jack Welsby

Jack Welsby missed St Helens’ win over Hull FC last weekend with a ‘few niggles’ as head coach Kristian Woolf rested the star after a tough few weeks.

That didn’t disrupt Saints too much as they still consigned the Black and Whites to a 60-6 thrashing.

That being said, Welsby will return for the home fixture this Friday night against Hull KR which will take place at the Totally Wicked Stadium as Woolf revealed what position he will play.

“Jack Welsby will play in the halves and Ben Davies will play in the centres,” Woolf said.

Though Woolf acknowledged the injury crisis that most teams are going through, the Saints boss has also referenced the return of three important KR stars.

“I think it’s this time of the year where we’ve all got our injury problems and we’ve got young fellas in there who made their debuts against Castleford,” he said.

“I think if you look at the other side of it, they’ve also named Mikey Lewis, Lachlan Coote and Rowan Milnes, so it’s their strongest spine for a number of weeks – everyone is missing some players at this stage of the year.”

The Saints head coach believes that KR will be ‘desperate’ for the win given their position on the Super League ladder.

“I think with that sort of spine they certainly can be (play-off contenders).

“They’re in there fighting for one, they’re going to be desperate and will play a desperate game with energy and the way they’re going to approach it.

“Our challenge is to be just as desperate. We want to achieve things ourselves, we want to win things and we have to match the desperation of Hull KR.”

Saints will be without Sione Mata’utia who has a minor injury as well as the suspended Morgan Knowles after he received a one-match ban for a shoulder charge in the win over Hull.
