New St Helens assistant coach Lee Briers has described his excitement about getting to work with the side’s new NRL signings.
Briers was confirmed to be joining Paul Wellens’ coaching staff on a two-year contract ahead of next season.
As a player, he was also at the Red Vee, making his debut for the club and winning the Challenge Cup at the age of 18.
He then went on to become a legend at Warrington Wolves, making over 400 appearances.
As a coach, he has had a number of roles already, including at rivals Wigan Warriors, and most recently at Brisbane Broncos.
St Helens assistant Lee Briers details excitement about working with NRL stars
Speaking to The Bench podcast, Briers said: I even said to people at the Broncos, “why wouldn’t you go after Kyle Feldt”? He’s like… killing it.
“When I’ve done background checks, he’s just an unbelievable person. Yeah, an unbelievable person. And he’s coming here for the right reasons. He’s actually mentioned that.”
He also spoke about Tristan Sailor, saying: “Listen, when a club like St. Helens comes in for you, it doesn’t matter who you are, you’re going to be interested.
“I know there were a couple of clubs interested. Paul and Rushy, they supported him a hell of a lot and sold a dream to him. He might have felt that was in the same camp but Tristan’s coming here and he’s not coming here just to go back to the NRL.
“Tristan’s speaking about getting his citizenship and being here for a hell of a long time.”
That’s certainly an exciting prospect for Saints, who have had a diasppointing season in 2024 so far.
Sailor was in high-demand, and has plenty of years ahead of him, while Feldt is a certain NRL icon coming into the twilight of his career.
