St Helens 24-10 Hull FC: Highlights, player ratings and talking points

St Helens took on Hull FC at the Totally Wicked Stadium tonight.

Things couldn’t have started any worse for Hull with Brad Fash taken off in the fourth minute after a lengthy stoppage due to a head knock.

It got even worse for the Black and Whites as Tommy Makinson dotted down moments later.

Hull started growing into the game, though, and Darnell McIntosh proved quickest to a pinpoint Jake Connor kick before Saints crossed as the hooter sounded.

Jonny Lomax dotted down in the second-half with Makinson getting his second 14 minutes from the end, but McIntosh was able to reply with only six minutes left off what looked like a forward pass to round off the scoring at 24-10.

Highlights

Jake Connor’s pinpoint kick for Darnell McIntosh was superb.

The clashes between Ligi Sao and Chris Satae and Alex Walmsley and Agnatius Paasi were a joy to behold.

Jonny Lomax’s try was brilliant after Konrad Hurrell cut Hull apart.

Talking points

1. Saints’ defence

Viewers may have thought that after such a brutal Challenge Cup semi-final, St Helens could be lethargic. But, their defence was champion-like and full of vim and vigour. The Saints certainly looked like in the mood to hit Hull and hit them hard.

2. Sickening head clash

Rugby league is trying its best to avert any head knocks and further consequences, but sometimes it just happens and Brad Fash was caught in a sickening head clash with Saints’ Matty Lees. The Hull man couldn’t continue and the Black and Whites were down one interchange for 76 minutes.

3. Hull’s halfback dilemma

Luke Gale was left out of the squad by Brett Hodgson in order to pick Joe Lovodua and Josh Reynolds in the halves. But, the decision didn’t seem to work too well as the Black and Whites were stifled in attack by tremendous Saints defence.
