St George Illawarra Dragons have offered England international Gareth Widdop a new contract which could end any speculation about his future.
The 27-year-old had been linked to Super League in 2018 and in particular Leeds Rhinos, who are thought to be in the market for a new half-back.
However, as expected, the Dragons have offered their captain a new deal which is likely to have been enhanced by his man-of-the-match performance against Penrith last weekend.
Former St Helens, Wigan and Castleford head coach Ian Millward is the current director of rugby league pathways at St George and he confirmed the new offer to SportingLife.com.
“At this point in time, we’ve made him an offer to stay,” said Millward.
“We’re only in very early discussions but we’d like to keep Gareth at our club. We haven’t put a time frame on it – we want dialogue to keep progressing.”
