Overseas star Esan Marsters has revealed who he would like to see appointed head coach of Huddersfield Giants.
The West Yorkshire side have been without a team boss since Ian Watson was “stood down” on July 11.
Assistant-coach Luke Robinson was placed in temporary charge and while there hasn’t been a major upturn in results, Marsters reckons he is the right man to take Giants forward.
Marsters was a try scorer in last Sunday’s Magic Weekend win over Castleford Tigers, which was his return from a knee injury suffered against Catalans Dragons in June and his first appearance under Robinson in his caretaker role.
“The stuff he is doing with the team, I think it’s something special,” the 28-year-old Huddersfield Giants centre told Serious About Rugby League.
“I can’t give too much credit to him; to be in the position he is now and take over a team that wasn’t performing, getting players to play for each other is massive.
“I think he is the right guy for the job and I hope the higher people at Huddersfield see that.”
Marsters’ return is a boost to Robinson’s hopes of a positive end to the campaign. Giants won only one of the six games he missed, but the player stressed: “The boys have done a lot of hard work over the weeks I’ve been out and it’s good to be back.
“The lungs were hurting [after last week’s game], but hopefully we can start building on that performance.
“I just want to be out there playing each week so credit to the physios for getting me back better than expected. They have done a lot of hard work for me to get back in the team.
“I didn’t have to do too much work for it, but it was good to score a try at Magic Weekend as well. It’s a good concept.”
Marsters believes Giants, who visit Salford Red Devils on Saturday, can use the win over Tigers as a foundation for a strong end to the year.
“That’s what we really want to do, set a good platform for next year,” he pledged.
“There’s a lot of good young players coming through like Aidan McGowan, Sam Halsall and Sam Hewitt, guys who have come through the academy.
“It is going to be good for them getting some experience as well. What Robbo has done is bring a lot of positivity around the group so if we can build on that it should be good.”
