There’s been a number of impressive father and son news items in recent seasons.
Look at Leon Pryce and his son Will, Keith Mason and his son Lukas, but one former Leeds Rhinos and St Helens favourite has his own story to tell about his own child.
Kevin Iro, who also made 100 appearances for Wigan between 1987 and 1991, made 124 appearances for Leeds as well as 76 for St Helens before hanging up his boots in 2001.
But it’s the turn of his son Kayal to now make moves in the world of rugby league.
After previously being signed for the Newcastle Knights’ under-20s side, Kayal was snapped up by the Cronulla Sharks as a ‘pre-season’ training player with a view to earning a permanent deal as the NRL kicks off again in 2022.
Just 21 years of age, Iro represented the Cook Islands in the 2019 Rugby League World Cup 9s, scoring two tries in a 30–7 victory against Tonga.
He made his full international début in the 66–6 win over South Africa on 21 June 2019 at fullback, but has been tipped to have a bright future in the game, following in the footsteps of dad Kevin and uncle Tony, who also made appearances for Wigan and Leigh in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
