Ex-Bradford, Hull FC and Wakefield head coach Brian Smith has been named as David Kidwell’s assistant coach for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
He and Penrith reserve grade coach Garth Brennan will assist Kidwell following the resignation of former England coach Steve McNamara, who has taken over at Catalans.
Smith will bring a wealth of experience to the Kiwis coaching ranks as they aim to regain the trophy they lost to Australia in 2013.
Speaking on the appointment, Kidwell said: “Brian’s record speaks for itself. He has played first grade and coached in the NRL and UK Super League.
“He also coached NSW Country, so knows what’s required to bring players together from their clubs for short campaigns.”
New Zealand kick off their World Cup campaign with a tricky match against Samoa in Auckland on Saturday 28th October.
