Sky pundits stunned by “world class” moment in “a stinker” of a game

Barrie McDermott

Salford Red Devils haven’t been their vintage selves to start the season but we saw a glimmer of how good they can be on Thursday night when they scored what Sky pundits said was a World Class try.

This bodes well for the Red Devils who were the entertainers in 2022 and when the ground firms up and it gets warmer and drier in the coming weeks they could be hard to stop.

On Thursday we saw their strike power from deep when Kallum Watkins jinked across the line and offloaded it to Ryan Brierley who broke down the wing before kicking ahead to Brodie Croft.

Jon Wilkin said of the try: “This is as good as it gets, this is World Class.”

Barrie McDermott then added: “Kallum Watkins in his Leeds days would do that three or four times a game but he has a different role now even though he still plays centre internationally.”

Wilkin then went on to explain the significance of Watkins’ involvement:

“He has run aggressively across the defensive line and his ability to engage three or four defenders and it disrupts the structure of the Castleford Tigers defence.

“That is them at their best.”

It was a rare highlight in what Wilkin described as “a stinker of a first half” from Paul Rowley’s men:

“Halftime came at the right time for Salford. They produced a stinker of a first half. If they have aspirations for the play-offs, they will have to be much, much better.”

The rare highlights are when the audience turn the sound down.

With experts like these it’s hardly any wonder RL is in a sink hole of negativity!
