Sky pundit says Super League coach is “on a week by week trial” after defeat

It’s Rivals Round in Super League so everything is taken to the extremes.

The wins are sweeter and the defeats more crushing and after this weekend’s action there is perhaps a bit more pressure on two coaches.

Tony Smith at Hull FC who has lost the last six and Mark Applegarth at Wakefield Trinity after failing to win any of their first eight games.

Meanwhile, the side who defeated Wakefield this week to leap frog Hull in the table are with interim coach Andy Last.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jon Wells said he believes that Applegarth, like Last, is now on a week by week trial: “As Andy Last has been, I believe he is on a week by week trial now.

“They now need to look to the next game and now he is on a seven game warning.”

Meanwhile, he also claimed that Tony Smith would be under pressure if Hull lost the derby which they did on Friday night.

So, Wells heaping the pressure on both coaches.

However, Jamie Jones-Buchanan called for Wakefield to stick with Applegarth:

“I’d stick with him, I’d stick with it.

“We had to do it at Leeds, the coach left and we had to appoint someone who stirred us away from the monotony and we got to the Grand Final, you could always see the potential was there.

“It is a different context with Wakefield, the turn over of players there with 10 debuts, 27 players used, there is all kinds of calamity there.

“You could get Wayne Bennett at his best and I’m not sure he could turn that around.

“I am not sure there is someone with more passion than Mark Applegarth.”
