Seven clubs Ben Hunt could join following transfer request

One of the stars of Australia’s World Cup win in 2022 has requested to leave their current club.

Bent Hunt of St George Illawarra Dragons requested a release today but had it turned down.

The club confirmed in the following statement:

“The Dragons can confirm that today the club received a request from the management of Ben Hunt for a release from his playing contract. This request has been denied.

“Ben is contracted through to the end of the 2025 season and is a big part of the current and future plans of the Dragons as the club builds towards achieving sustained success in the coming years,” said Dragons CEO Ryan Webb.

“We’re committed to working with Ben to understand and address his concerns as we all have the same goal of building a strong and successful club.”

But where could Hunt end up?

With fees branded around for as little as $250,000 plenty of clubs could be interested across the world.

Wests Tigers
With halfback Luke Brooks turning down a deal to remain with the Tigers, Wests are in the market for a new halfback. They could do a lot worse than the World Cup winner.

Canterbury Bulldogs
Halfbacks are the most sought after players in the world and Canterbury have been looking for their next number seven. They missed out on Mitchell Moses so signing Hunt would be a brilliant signing for the club.

New Zealand Warriors
With Shaun Johnson coming to the end of his career and his future still not quite clear, the Warriors should make a move for Hunt. Though it is likely he will want to stick around in Australia.

The Dolphins
The Dolphins have defied the odds in 2023 and are always chasing a huge signing. Ben Hunt would be exactly that and it would allow Hunt to return to Queensland.

Catalans Dragons
Catalans are the Super League side when it comes to huge NRL names joining the competition, especially halfbacks. With Mitchell Pearce reportedly joining Sydney Roosters in 2024 after replacing James Maloney. So Hunt could be the next in this long line of NRL stars leading the Dragons.

Wigan Warriors
Perhaps a little unlikely, but one of the biggest names in rugby league, Wigan have the size needed to attract someone like Ben Hunt. He is the kind of player they need.

Brisbane Broncos
Now the front runners for Hunt’s signature, could there be a reunion on the cards for Hunt? This would surely make Brisbane title contenders.
