Sheffield tie down pivotal duo

Sheffield have confirmed the re-signings of hooker Greg Burns and experienced halfback Anthony Thackeray for the 2021 season.

Burns, 25, made his Eagles debut in 2015 and has gone on to make over 60 appearances and constantly battle for the starting hooker spot.

Thackeray, 34, joined the club at the start of 2019 after fruitful spells at several Championship and Super League clubs including Hull, Castleford, Halifax and Featherstone.

Both were part of the Eagles’ 1895 Cup winning squad last year and will bolster Mark Aston’s squad again in 2021.

On the re-signings, Sheffield head coach Aston said: “The pleasing thing with Greg is that he had the adversity at the start, not getting into the Academy, but he found a way by perseverance. He has flourished since then and he is still developing.

“He has turned himself into an established Championship performer with the amount of games he has played. He is smart, his detail around the ruck is very good, and he just needs to believe in himself more.

“He (Thackeray) is a class act and scores tries. But it’s also his experience and knowledge, helping develop younger players, that is important.

“He has a good reputation and there was a lot of interest in him, so we are glad to get his signature over the line. He loves it at the club and will flourish and deliver like he does week in, week out.”

The pair become the fourth and fifth players to sign new deals in the past week, following Josh Guzdek, Blake Broadbent and Olly Davies.
