Sheffield Eagles forward leaves club but set for Championship rival switch

Sheffield Eagles forward Mitch Clark in action

Sheffield Eagles forward Mitch Clark has been released by the club via mutual consent on compassionate grounds.

The 31-year-old joined Championship side Sheffield before the start of their 2024 campaign and made 27 appearances for the club in that time.

Clark has played 11 clubs so far in his career, starting at Doncaster back in 2015, and has moved almost every season since.

Although he is of New Zealand heritage, the former Sheffield Eagles forward was born in Pontefract when his father Trevor was playing for Bradford Northern.

In a statement on their website, a Sheffield spokesperson has said: “We’d like to thank Mitch for all he has done for the club over the last year, and we wish him the best with his future endeavours.”

Clark started his career at Doncaster before heading to Bradford for the 2016 season, following in his father’s footsteps.

He then made the switch to Hull KR the following year and spent some time at York on dual registration.

In 2018, he signed for Castleford Tigers on a two-year deal but was loaned out to Featherstone Rovers and Halifax during those two years and eventually signing for Leigh during the 2019 season.

Having impressed in that short spell, Wigan Warriors came in for the forward ahead of the 2020 season.

The following year, he was loaned out to Newcastle Thunder and signed for them for the 2022 season.

He made 52 appearances for the Thunder before a move to Sheffield last year.

It looks likely that York Knights could be in line to sign Clark with a move to their Championship rivals on the horizon.

York head coach Mark Applegarth has been looking to bulk up in the forwards.

The Knights have lost their opening two rounds of the 2025 Championship season.

They were beaten 50-4 by Oldham in the opening round before a close 7-6 loss to Toulouse at home last week.

Sheffield’s fate this season doesn’t fare much better with two losses also.

Halifax beat the, 28-14 in round one followed by a 10-8 loss to Widnes on Sunday.
