Sheffield Eagles 12-58 Hull FC: Highlights and match report

Hull FC booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup today with a resounding win over Championship Sheffield.

The Black and Whites were superb in attack with Connor Wynne grabbing a hat-trick.

Highlights:

Wonderful Wynne
It was a wonderful afternoon for Connor Wynne who scored a hat-trick of tries in a thumping win for Hull FC. However, his most important contribution was a try saving tackle when the Black and Whites led 12-0 to end a dangerous Sheffield attack and give Hull the ball back.

Superb Savelio
A five minute spell at the end of the first half belonged to Andre Savelio. He scored from close range in the 32nd minute before his break set up Connor Wynne for his second after 37 minutes. These two tries killed the game.

Match Report:

It didn’t take long for Hull FC to set the tone for the afternoon with Jake Connor scoring a close range try to give Hull FC an early lead promoted to a 6-0 advantage thanks to a Ben McNamara conversion. This was within the first three minutes of the game.

By the 12 minute mark it was 12-0 with Adam Swift scoring from 80 metres out from a scrum. Connor Wynne then grabbed a double either side of an Andre Savelio close range score on the back of a Jake Connor 40/20. Savelio helped set up Wynne’s second. His brace cemented him as the player of the first 40 after a superb try saving tackle.

McNamara’s third goal made it 26-0 at the break.

Josh Griffin then got on the scoresheet at the start of the second half to exorcise the demons of his last cup appearance when he gifted St Helens a try on the back on an acl injury. Speaking of injury comebacks, fellow centre Carlos Tuimavave crowned his comeback with a try shortly after. McNamara’s goal making it 38-0.

Connor then grabbed a second as Hull brought up 40, this was on the back of good work from Jordan Johnstone.

A pair of tries from Sheffield gave the Eagles something to smile about with Kris Welham scoring before a long range try from loanee Tom Holmes.

Mitieli Vulikijapani then got things back on track for Hull before Wynne grabbed a deserved hat-trick to bring up the half century. That looked like the end of the scoring but Jordan Lane then crowned his return to the loose-forward spot with a try of his own to make it 56-12. McNamara then wrapped up a 58-12 win with another conversion.
