Yesterday there was plenty to talk about as England defeated France but one moment was quite bizarre and concerning.

That was went Jake Wardle and Matty Ashton chased a lovely grubber kick but slid into the advertising hoarding smashing through onto the concrete of the stand.

It was Wardle who came off the worst requiring the most treatment but ultimately he was fined.

When coach Shaun Wane was asked about it, he gave a blunt response:

“I wasn’t worried. I wanted him to get up and crack on with the game. Great player Jake. I thought he and Toby both played well and carried the ball with threat but both can improve, no doubt they can be better on things.”

Wardle did get up and crack on creating a try for Harry Smith just minutes later.

England’s attack wasn’t what Shaun Wane was concerned with however revealing an unhappiness at defence:

“I was quite harsh defensively at halftime. Andy Last has been good with our attack this week but I focused on defence because there were a few things that weren’t right with our defence at halftime believe it or not.

“I’m not trying to embarrass France with that but I am looking at what we would be like against Tonga or Samoa.

“France were underdone. They were young but a big athletic team and we can only play what we play against and it leaves us in a good position for a tough series.

“I saw improvements in the second half which is probably the most satisfying thing for me.”
