Shaun Wane reveals surprise absentee for Greece clash and all but confirms position switch for St Helens star

Shaun Wane has given an update on how his team will look in their final group game of the Rugby League World Cup as they take on Greece in Sheffield hoping to keep their 100% record as they go into the quarter-finals.

They will have to do so without skipper Sam Tomkins however.

Tomkins was taken off at halftime against France in the last game but was brought back on to replace the injured Kallum Watkins who will miss this weekend’s game through a head knock.

Tomkins will now miss the Greece game alongside Watkins as coach Shaun Wane hopes to give him a deserved rest to ensure he is ready for the knockout stages.

Wane revealed that Tomkins has some things he need to sort out physically to be ready for the finals.

On Tomkins, he said: “Yeah Sam is going to get a break this week. He’s got a few things he needs to sort out with his body and hopefully he will be flying for the quarter-finals.”

This will likely mean Jack Welsby starts at fullback with George Williams and Marcy Sneyd in the halves.

When asked if this would be the case, Wane said: “Yeah it could be.” But he also chuckled as it seems pretty obvious so expect that to be the look of the England side this weekend.

George Williams will subsequently captain the side from the halves as he and Marc Sneyd start together for the second time in the tournament and the third time when you include the Fiji friendly.
